Serum is my first 1v1/2v2 map. It was made in Reach and originally designed for Forge Hub's 1v1 Smackdown tournament, but it didn't make the cut. Originally inspired by NeXn's Zen, Serum was created with the idea that every room would have 3 levels of interactive verticality, with the 3rd level being very dangerous, and a 1 way teleporter (like Zen had).

Before I started designing the rooms, I knew I needed a way to bring all this verticality together in a cohesive manner that distributed map flow throughout the rooms, so they weren't all plugged side by side. That's where the middle hallway came in, and the second hallway just went right underneath it. Once I had the hallway laid out, the rooms formed themselves nicely around the hallway, and finally the catwalks came through the entire map to incorporate the 3rd tier.

The catwalks, in my opinion, make it interesting because it allows players to play aggressively and push quickly from room to room at the cost of predictability, restricted movement and the risk of falling all the way down to the 1st floor.
