A remake of the classic Halo 3 Big Team Battle map Avalanche. Meticulously built to replicate the Avalanche experience that so many players loved.
Primarily a collaboration between myself and nillapuddin626, over the course of the past few months we've streamed the build process, accepted feedback and suggestions from our viewers, brought in friends, acquaintances, and a few talented folks to help us refine our design. We're not about to claim this a 1:1 remake, but, using advanced measuring techniques we recreated the map to an incredibly high level of accuracy, for the non-playable space we formed our own aesthetic built around a renewed Forerunner style.
For being such an enormous map we knew from the outset that it would be a budgetary challenge, so we committed ourselves to forge in the most economical and creative ways possible. This resulted in very efficient geometry while still following our very strict objectives of retaining accuracy, frame rate performance, and player containment.
We made one notable addition, inside the base there is a chamber which houses the newfound Wasp. This room is protected from the inside and outside with clearly distinguishable team coloured game-labeled barriers which perform different duties depending on the game type selected.
Strongholds: Blocks enemy entry from both sides so enemy can't steal Wasp.
CTF: Blocks enemy entry and exit on the outter wall only, they have access to the chamber but cannot leave through the front wall with your flag, ensuring original flag exit paths.
Slayer: Both entry and exit to the Wasp chamber are freely accessable to both teams. They WILL steal your Wasp so keep an eye on it.
The base colour markings are constructed of Team Labeled Shields and will change colours depending on the spawning team and game type selected. In Multi-Round games they (should) change to the colour of the current spawning team, and will appear white in both bases for FFA game types.
The weapon layout does it's best to replicate Halo 3's weapon roles while giving players a few new toys to play with. For instance, the on-field Brute Shot is replaced with a Plasma Caster. The Laser, which was originally intended to counter the Falcon, is replaced with a Berserks Claw. It fills the role of the Laser and Halo 3's heat seaking Rockets and can take down a Wasp with 3 tracking shots, leaving enough ammo to clear the upper Mancanon Stronghold platofrm.
This map was explicitly built for the Custom Games Community with the upcoming game browser in mind. Everyone knows and hopefully loves Avalanche but we are also focussing on an audience of PC players new to the Halo franchise and hope to provide a similar experience to what players found in Halo 3.
