If you're using components it won't matter which template you start off with. And to use components, download the sandbox sketchup model stickied in forge discussion. They're very easy to use, and you can use the axis guides to swivel the items around as you please.

If you have other questions just ask. :D

What I do is come up with structures I think are cool or look good together. Then I just build on from there. In sketchup of course.
