Old maps, New Man Cannons...

If someone else has discussed this or discovered it first, then I'm sorry, but I didn't see it covered in Forge 101 or in the forums. So here goes.

The other day, I was playing forge on Sandtrap. I realized you can create man cannons in the old maps... sort of. The answer is teleporters.

It works really well but its a tedious process. First, place a Sender Node where you want the "Man Cannon" to begin. Doesn't matter where, just put it where ever your heart desires.

Step 2 is where having a buddy or an extra controller comes in handy. Have your buddy spawn a crate and have him hold it HIGH in the sky, and I mean HIGH. Depends on how far you want to throw your men out of the cannon. Once you've got him holding it in the sky, spawn a Receiver Node and place it on top of the crate. Aim the Node carefully so that the player spawns facing the correct way. Once the Node is stable, set it to the same channel as the Sender node you placed and delete the crate, then move to step 3.

Step 3 is tricky. To help get it right, go back to player mode and walk through your Sender Node on the ground. You will be teleported into the sky and you will begin to fall. Keep track of where it is you land and place another sender node right where you think players will always land. This is probably the hardest part, that being said, its a pretty easy process.

Step 4, using the same method described in step 1, place a receiver node at the point from where you want your players to be launched. You don't have to put it in the sky but just make sure that the exit point of the receiver node is angled up from the ground. You will see why this is important in a moment. Once you've done all that, make sure that the last 2 nodes you placed are on a different channel from the 2 you placed before.

Now your ready to see a man get cannoned! Walk into the first teleporter, if done correctly, you will fall into the next sender node. The momentum that you gained from falling will be translated horizontally once you exit the end receiver node, which will launch the player across the map depending on how far you fell, simulating a man cannon! I used it on Sandtrap and its pretty fun.

You can actually bring the amount of teleporters down to 3, but give it a try. Hope this wasn't a waste of your time. :)

I think this technique is called "tele-launching." I used it a lot in my Tele-Coaster map. It is a series of those launches set up in a loop.

One thing I would add is that if you rotate the high receiver teleporter to face straight down, the player's momentum when they walk into the first teleporter won't matter. Any extra momentum will send them straight down, which is where they're going anyway. That way they hit the bottom teleporter every time.

Now you're thinking with portals!

I've never used this myself, but I know I've seen it before. I think someone posted it in this forum when the new site first came up.

Haha yeah I figured I wasn't the first to discover it, sorry about that. I never thought to aim the first receiver node straight down though, thanks Furious D.
