Question How to make switches?

Now, I have heard of switches before but never really understood them. Could someone give me a summary of:
  1. what they are.
  2. how they work.
  3. how to build them.
I would really appreciate this very much.

Ps. What type of gameplay are switches best for?
(eg. Like slayer, CTF ect.)
