It has to equal 14 because that is the only number that two different combinations can add up to be.

We know that it has to be one of these two because the man does not know after the second clue.

And Camofo, either you took a guess and got lucky or you're an utter genius.

Okay, now I completely understand how to solve this puzzle.

It took me a minute or two to work it out, but I eventualy got it.
