Obviously the situation where the current setup doesn't work is active threads. Taking you to what was the last post some 5 minutes ago (example) is rarely going to be any more helpful than just taking you to the original post, or if possible, the actual last post.

I support this if you can get it to work, it is sometimes quite annoying to be sent to the last post rather than the OP. A good place to incorporate this would be the debate forum, sending people to the OP rather than the last post might reduce the amount of people who just reiterate points that have already been made.

I honestly don't see the point.
In the Forum Index, when clicking the Thread Title I always get linked straight to the OP, whilst clicking the Arrow either takes me to the very last Post, or a few pages back.

I'm not sure if you did anything yet Shock, but now when I go into my User CP, threads that I just posted in appear as a New Post, and this didn't happen before.

yeah, again part of the reason is EXACTLY What chrstphrbrnnn said. another thing is that there is a thread with a weird name and you want to read the OP to see what it is. For all you know it could be "Dump 100 of the biggest pictures off your computer onto this thread" and it would take hours to scroll up.
