Default Welcome new members with a instant message.

I have an idea for when new members join Forgehub:

When a new member joins, they receive an instant PM that shows all the rules of Forgehub. I know there's a thread in every sub-forum, but do you honestly think every member will go through it? That's why I think if they received a PM there would be no excuse that they didn't read the rules.

I haven't signed up to forgehub since April so I don't know if this is currently being used.

Here is a example of what can be inside the message.

ForgeHub is not like Bungie.net - we have rules about posting maps, and posting in general that are different to rules at other fourms. We encourage you to read the rules here.

We hope you enjoy your time at ForgeHub.

Hmm that's a good. It frustrates me to see so many newcomers not following the rules because they haven't looked at them. They might put the map name and the link to it and that's all. In June there wasn't one (that's when I signed up). Hope that admins and staff see to this.

The only thing is that most will still probably not read it. I personally wouldn't, just like I don't read the ToS for anything, simply because it's a giant wall of text no one would care to read. It's not really an excuse to not know the rules of a certain forum anyway since the sticky thread always says "READ BEFORE POSTING"

You might not read it, but lets just say half of the people that join up read it. This will make half of the people that joined understand it better. It's also less people to have to report and it might help the mods out.

I wholeheartedly am against this. It's harassing, almost. I know that HT uses this, and frankly, it's annoying. I register, and bam! A message from the 'staff'. I make one post, and bam! Another message. It just makes the community feel robotic, almost.

I'm going to let this one decide itself out. How would you like to know that the first welcome message is the rules? Secondly, people should learn the rules themselves, because if they are to read the rules on their own will, they learn it better. I'm for this because people should know the rules, and unfortunately rarely they will read the rules willingly.

So I'm staying on my side of the riverbed.

This is what i'd see it as if i would have recieved a message of this kind when i joined.
"I don't trust you new guy! Here you go, these the rules newbie. Read now because you aren't mature and intelligent enough to do it yourself."

I think that a PM is a great idea. Too many infraction-worthy posts from unknowing new members have been popping up lately. An alternative to this is to link to the rules directly after sign up, just in case they don't see the PM because of the unfamiliar layout.

I still believe that when they join, they should take a quiz and they need a certain percent to make it.

This would be a good idea for new members such as myself. I did not know the rules when I joined and I didn't think to look for them first. Then I got a PM from someone after my first post and realized that the rules were very important!

My maps: Maverick
Collaborated maps: Doubled Avense
