The Longest Yard

The Longest Yard
by TexturedSun

About a week or so ago, i posted a Map Testing thread for this exact map. After not many responses and my Live disconnecting during several play-tests, i am finally releasing the map :D

Description

Longest Yard is a 2-6 man enclosed map built in Foundry. Its fast-paced close quarters action. This is how i described the map layout in the testing thread:

Quote:

This is the Main Lift and combat space, you can see in the extreme foreground (at the bottom of the picture) the platform where the lift shoots you to. Under the grating/fence walls you can see on the floor is a corridor that stretches the width of the map into two symmetrical, very small, low roofed rooms which have jumps up into the side galleries on either side (which you can just see at either side of the image).

This is looking from the Lift side back over the main area. On either side are the Galleries, providing cover while still allowing you to see out and pop some headshots at the opposite gallery (should be good for SWAT). Here you can also see the platform which the lift puts you on. Behind that there is a square-shaped corridor which wraps around the large pillar in the background. Behind the pillars, where the 'A' and 'B' signs are, is the access to the 'Galleries' and the drop downs into the small rooms described above.
To further that description, i've created a very basic interactive Flash layout of the map. I initially designed this to be embedded into my post ... but since it doesn't look like i can do that here, i'm just gonna have to post a link.
Click Here to view the Interactive Layout
Note: The flash document was meant to be embedded into the page, therefore it would have had sizes constrained upon it. When you click this link, the document will resize to the constraints of the page. It shouldn't pose a problem though ...

Compatible Gametypes

Slayer - 2-6 man FFA, or two teams of 2 or 3 players.
King of the Hill - 2-6 man FFA, or two teams of 2 or 3 players.
Oddball - 2-6 man FFA.
Territories - The built in gametype Land Rally works with two teams. I was going to create a custom gametype built around this, but i haven't really had a chance. I may update with one, but not many people like territories that much.
Team SWAT - Again its a case of two teams of 2 or 3 players.

I recommend turning the radar down to 10m for all gametypes and starting with 1 or no frag grenades.

Weapons/Equipment

The weapons are all displayed in the flash layout ( click here ) but for those who don't have Flash (wtf?) or are too lazy (you fail), here is a list:

1x Rocket Laucher - Spawns after 3 mins with no spare rounds.
1x Shotgun - 2.5 min respawn, no spare rounds.
1x Mauler - 90sec respawn (i think, i actually can't remember), no spare rounds.
4x Battle Rifle
2x SMG
2x Spiker

2x Spike Grenade
4x Plasma Grenade
4x Frag Grenade

1x Regenerator
1x Bubble Shield

The main reason i listed the details of the first 3 weapons is because a lot of people are either:
1: You saw the power weapons and immediately were judgemental, thinking that 'this can't possibly be balanced'.
2: You saw the rocket launcher and shotgun and went 'waahooooo, i <3 teh powah wepunzz'.
Seriously though ... i've given this some thorough testing and the weapons are well balanced enough with the powerups and grenades so as not to give one person a clear advantage.

Screenshots
Here's some in-game action ... if you want to know where abouts on the map each screen was taken, look at the Flash File which i have linked to several times

Download Here

Credits
xThakila - for trying to get out of the map (but failing).
Cushti 1993 and his cronies - helping to test the gametypes.

Thanks for your time :) let me know your criticisms etc.

Looks great already! I can see some inspiration from that H1 level wit the 2 halves (sorry, forgot the name)

boxxy ur fuckin awesome.
she is the essence of the pure, unadulterated, un-fagged mind of a b-tard. and that, in and of itself, is like buddhism's nirvana; one of the hardest things to achieve.
that, or its ADD.

What WhiteLime thinks

I wish i could have help play tested. :( red ring came that day.

But the map looks really well done and i have to say that i really! like the look of the 'gallery' i would have to say that it looks jsut the right size so you could get a few nades in there. but there is only one thing i'm thinking about, the spawn points.. were would these be located and could anyone spawn camp. I like that you have also used underneath and that the whole outside is interlocked.

[17:07] <Projectt2501> You are pulling me.....
[17:07] <Projectt2501> lol
[17:07] <Domi_Boy> Indeed.

In all the time we playtested, no-one managed to spawn camp and there was only 1 in 10 times when anyone spawned close to someone else.

There's plenty of spawn areas to ensure when you do spawn, you're placed far enough away from the action to allow you not to be insta-killed.

Argh I said i would help test this and have you as a friend.. sorry I missed it.

Anyway it looks to me like we have another forger of higher skills and win with the likes of Matty, Draw the line, Cosmic Rick, etc. Looks very nice indeed, I shall download and investigate it moar. Kind of reminds me of Chill Out, which is a god thing of course. Also that flash pic is awesome, you should make the link bigger or bolded or something cause I very really missed it.

Great work.

there we go ... i've made it more prominent :p although, i kinda hoped people would read the text, cause its got explanations and stuff in ... oh well ... glad people like the Flash thing ... its nothing excessive, just simple and to the point ... i'll probably put some more detailed ones on my future maps.

also, thank you for the kind words :) i really appreciate it

...lack of interlocking? :( i think the only items that aren't interlocked are the weapons, the two signs and any random immovable scenery.
