Then I sang to him, "I believe I can fly... I believe I can touch the sky... I think about it every night and day! Spread my wings and fly away? I believe I can soar...

Well, it seems as though I'm in a tough spot. I don't work enough to pay rent and if I don't come up with 800 dollars by the end of this month, we're going to be evicted. So, what it seems that I have to do is sell some of my favorite stuff... I have to sell my computer, Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, and all of my games just to make it by... I've also got to sell some of my other stuff too, maybe even my television. This also means that I won't have internet, television, or much of anything else around here. And just thinking about how hard it is this month, well, Christmas isn't coming for us this year and it's our first Christmas as a married couple...

The Art of Video Gmes: Part One, Background Music

The Art of Video Games
A look into the art, and what makes a game good
*_Part 1: Background Music_*
While music has no effect on the way a game...

The Art of Video Games
A look into the art, and what makes a game good
Part 1: Background Music
While music has no effect on the way a game plays, it is one of the
very best parts of any good video game. Music sets the tone, the mood,
and much more. The music in a game describes the situation, and the
power of music can compell you to play differently as well.
Believe it or not, music itself can almost control the way a body
moves. You may recall a powerful chorus or rift in a song where you
could not help but move with the music. This same thing can happen even
when you are paying no attention to the music you hear, and while you
pay it no mind, your mind subconciously recieves it and reacts to it.
This is the purpose of Background Music, to force your mind to react
and, whether you believe it or not, alter how you play.

An upbeat, spirit lifting track will subconiously make you feel more
relaxed, or more in control as it plays, and less cautious. A good
example of what im talking about is the song "In Amber Clad" from
Halo 2.

In direct contrast, a deep, haunting track will make you feel weaker,
or less relaxed while it plays, causing your adrenaline to spike up.
Survival/Horror games use this to hint that you may be dumping in your
pants soon. A good example is "Devils...Monsters..." from
Halo: Combat Evolved, or "Pirate Fear" from Metroid prime.
__________________________________________________ _____________________
I will now talk about a few well known games that use the power of
music to make it a memorable experience.
__________________________________________________ _____________________
1) Super Mario (the franchise)
If you do not recognise the Super Mario Bros. theme, then you are
either a caveman or def. The second this historic song begins to play,
you feel right at home in Mario's world.

While it does not have much of an effect on how you will play normally,
nintendo made it to where it speeds up. This in turn, actually makes
the player want to speed up (even if there was no timer).

Nintendo knows that this song is able to get stuck into ones mind with
ease, and for some reason, you eventualy find yourself humming it. They
use this to some extent to make you want to play the game even more
(and you can see how well it works).

2) Gears of War (the series)
Gears of War's orchestra driven tracks are used to convey the feeling
of war. While it is slow, and very quiet (often not even playing)
between ecounters, it immediately becomes fast paced, and sometimes
even aggressive when the locust appear. And while you may believe it
only conveys the sense action, parts of some tracks convey a sense of
purpose, or of imminent victory.
Two examples of What Im Talking about are the Gears of War 1 Theme, and
Ephyra Streets II from Gears 1.

3) Metroid Prime (The Series)
Easily one of the very best examples of video game music is Metroid
Prime. Every Boss, every situation, and even every environment has it's
own unique track playing.
When battling a machine in a dark area, the game plays a track that
sounds both haunting and mechanical.
When you're fighting a swarm of insects, a fast-paced, high pitched
track plays in the background.
The music itself describes where you are, what's fighting you, or what
you're doing. You don't even have to see the screen to get a feeling of
what's going on.
If you are in a forest, the music almost perfectly describes a forest.
If you are in a factory, it reminds you of just that.
__________________________________________________ _____________________
So, next time you play your favorite game, I encourage you to listen to
the Background music, You may get an entirely different experience if
you pay attention to it.

Oh, and below I included a link to a website where you can find most of your favorite tracks from a video game. Trust me, If you want a song from a video game, you'll most likely find it there.

For decades, the Dalai Lama's approach to China has been cheerfully patient and optimistic.
So the announcement he is giving up attempts to persuade China to grant greater autonomy to Tibet will come as a shock to many.

He has expressed frustration before - and threatened to go into political retirement. But the key question now is what implications this announcement will have.

Will it lead, for example, to a hardening of position by the Tibetan government-in-exile, if the Dalai Lama's middle ground of modest autonomy within China is abandoned?

And does it also mean that the Dalai Lama wants to extract himself personally from the political fray? That too is unclear.

Mounting anger

The full answers may not emerge until after a special meeting of Tibetan exiles, now scheduled for November.

It is clear that frustration in the Tibet camp has rarely been greater.

In the aftermath of the riots in Tibet and surrounding areas earlier in 2008, China promised fresh talks.

Some Tibetans said at the time that they feared this was an empty gesture, merely designed to ease international pressure on Beijing in the run up to the Olympics.

The apparent deadlock in the talks seems to have confirmed those fears.

There is also confusion about what new strategy might emerge from the Tibetan camp.

Despite China's allegations, the Dalai Lama has always stopped short of a demand for full independence. But pressure for independence has grown amongst a feistier young generation which feels years of attempts at compromise have achieved nothing.

It is unlikely the Dalai Lama would support a pro-independence policy, but there may be some hardening of the Tibetan position.

Bowing out?

As a political ploy, the Dalai Lama's move does help to push Tibet back into the spotlight.

Post-Olympics, many Tibetans feel forgotten. And there is also the wider question of whether the Dalai Lama may indeed decide this is the time to extract himself from the political process in which he's been engaged for so long.

That would have striking implications. His international profile is one of Tibet's strongest cards and the government-in-exile would surely be weakened without his advocacy.

But his absence would also raise the stakes for China. Many see the Dalai Lama as Beijing's best hope - and urge the Chinese to do business with him while they can.

They may find what comes next - in terms of policy and personality - much less acceptable.

The tradition of this country, and one of the basics of its foundation, is religious freedom. What that means precisely is that each individual is free to practice his or her own religion without government interference--provided the government recognizes that what is practiced is indeed an acceptable religion. For example, a religion that practices homicide is not an acceptable religion in America.

What religious freedom does NOT mean is that any religious group is free to impose its values on other people. That is antithetic to the idea of religious freedom in this country and such a view is totally un-American. It's a true misery that some religious groups in the United States think it's appropriate for them to impose their religious values on the public at large, on people who are not of their religion. Some Catholic bishops, for example, need to be reminded that the United States is not the Holy Roman Empire.

Absolute truth proclaimed by authority is antithetical to any democratic society, especially to American democratic society. We're a pragmatic country, a people whose ideas are derived from many origins, religions, and cultures. We are not a theocracy and we are not a people who like ideology of any kind. In this country, we look at problems, try solutions, and then stick to what works. Any authority, religious or otherwise, proclaiming absolute truth to us is antithetical to what America is all about.

So is religion compatible with democracy? Yes, if you practice your religion or beliefs as you see fit without imposition on the lives of other people. Anything else is un-American, and that's what it needs to be called. Imposition of particular religious values by law or judicial declaration is un-American.

In a Ft.Worth,Texas suburb students wore black to "mourn the death of capitalism." The protest was organized by the middle school students via text-messages,while the high school students protest was organized on Facebook. In a shocking twist, the junior high protests were more overtly racist than the high school ones.
Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States, several unofficial protests were reported last week, most notably in schools that included Colleyville and Cross Timbers middle schools, as well as Grapevine and Northwest high schools.

Some of the protests had racial undertones; others, such as those in the middle schools, were more overt.

Following the election, students received multiple text messages on their mobile phones to dress in black as if they were in mourning, according to a parent of a Colleyville Middle School girl who received the message. The mother, who asked that her name be withheld, said her daughter did not participate.

The message also went out on the popular social Web site, Facebook, said Grapevine High School senior Scott Scheel, who did wear black on Wednesday.

There were also reports of several fights and students using derogatory language, including racial slurs.

Grapevine High School senior Carly Rosse, who wore black to school on Wednesday, said that students were "mourning the death of capitalism."

"It wasn’t racially motivated," Rosse said. "It was based on the fact that we didn’t agree with his policies. We didn’t like the outcome of the election and we were silently protesting."

Alysha Behn, also a senior at Grapevine High School, who called the behavior "silly," said it is just something that comes with living in a "red state," one with an overwhelming Republican majority.

"I wasn’t offend by it; it’s their right to be upset," said Behn.

Observers of the protest on Wednesday shared similar feelings; even those who supported the Democratic candidate, Barack Obama.

"We [Democrats] won. They can wear black all they want, but it doesn’t bother me," GHS senior April Rushin said.

Other Democratic students like senior Emily Smith said she probably would have been equally upset if Sen. John McCain had won the election, but for different reasons.

Although students across the district wore black in what was clearly perceived as a staged event, a statement from the Grapevine-Colleyville school district said no formal demonstration took place. It went on to say that it could confirm there had been a few instances of comments being made among students at several schools that were "inappropriate" in response to the election.

"This behavior is not tolerated in GCISD at any time; it goes against the character education values we teach and the culture of our district," said district Public Information Officer Megan Overman in an e-mail.

"Any students engaging in such behavior have been dealt with appropriately at the campus level, and teachers are using the events surrounding the election as learning opportunities to help students gain context and understanding of current events," Overman said.

Numerous students were given in-school suspension for their actions.

"It’s a shame that we still behave the way we do ...," said a mother with children at Cross Timbers Middle School, who also asked that her name not be used.

"Heaven is going to be made up of all colors and all backgrounds. What is God saying and feeling as He sees our reactions?

"This starts at home," she added.
*1.* Kid’s Pimp Costume...

1. Kid’s Pimp Costume
Does your son seem like a budding young entrepreneur? Is he a “people person”? Does he enjoy “smacking hoes”? Then why not inspire his inner-pimp with the beautifully-tailored Mac Daddy costume. Your boy will soon be commanding the respect of his peers with unabashed displays of misogyny and materialism. (Note: blinging jewellery, pimp-stick and dirty wad of money not included).

2. Ride-On Humvee
Give your child a head start on the road to environmental ignorance and climate-change denial by buying them a ride-on SUV. Swell with pride as your child confidently drives their militaristic Hummer around the playground while giggling at their wimpy toy-hybrid-driving friends.

Featuring a 2-speed gearbox, 12-inch all-terrain wheels and a fake GPS receiver it looks like the manufacturers have done a good job of replicating the toy’s monolithic, gas-guzzling, real-life counterpart. I’m not sure if this accuracy extends to fuel requirements, but if it does you can expect the 12V battery to burn up the equivalent of Belgium’s annual electricity consumption for every 30 minutes of driving fun.

3. McDonald’s Playsets
Can’t be bothered to waste time and money educating your child? Or perhaps you’ve achieved less than you hoped to in life and fear being outdone by Junior? Well, forget buying your child a toy stethoscope or some Meccano – hell, the jumped-up little git might want to become a doctor or an engineer. A wiser option is to start them off with a McDonald’s playset and watch those aspirations plummet in seconds. Just imagine how their face will light up as they make-believe a wonderful day of mind-numbing, low-paid, prospect-free employment.

On the plus side, McDonald’s playsets do have the inherent benefit that any accidental ingestion of the toy food is not to be feared since they probably have more nutritional value than a real-life Happy Meal.

4. Bratz
Many elements of the Bratz phenomenon are open to criticism - from the brand’s shameless promulgation of vapid consumerism to the shocking working conditions previously exposed within their manufacturer’s Chinese factories. However, I’m going to focus on the dolls’ embodiment of our society’s increasingly pervasive and detrimental sexualisation of young girls.

A report published last year by the American Psychological Association detailed the wide-ranging consequences of this trend, arguing that “ample evidence testing these theories indicates that sexualization has negative effects in a variety of domains, including cognitive functioning, physical and mental health, sexuality, and attitudes and beliefs”. In direct reference to the overtly-sexualised clothing sported by Bratz dolls the report went on to express concerns over the “worrisome” association of “an objectified adult sexuality” in a doll designed for preteen girls.

So if you want your daughter to have a low self-esteem and distorted conceptions of attractiveness and sexuality, then get your credit card out and order her a Bratz doll this Christmas - she’ll thank you for it now, but probably not later when she’s racked with insecurities and eating disorders.

The great (and by “great” I actually mean hilariously awful) thing about Bratz is that this twisted sexualisation doesn’t stop with the standard doll products. Hell no – the unsettling aesthetic continues on even more disturbing lines with Bratz secondary products such as the Andalusian Honey Fun Horse. Take a look at that coy pose, doe-like “come-to-bed” eyes, luxurious mane and playfully cocked leg and tell me that that is not a slutty horse.

5. Iraq War Military Heroes Playing Cards
A deck of collectible playing cards make an ideal present for a young teenager. Especially when they come fully loaded with right-wing propaganda. Whether it’s Poker or Snap, your son or daughter can celebrate the perpetrators of one of the most controversial wars in recent history as they play with their friends. No doubt they’ll soon dismiss the war’s hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths, the needlessly wasted lives of thousands of military personnel and the subsequent geopolitical turmoil as the necessary, noble acts of a heroic and altruistic administration. They’ll soon be praising the Ace of Spades as a man of vision, compassion and strategic genius.
