Last week's SNF had a rather homely feel to it, that kind of familiarity you only really get with those of a truly likeminded disposition. Just as we pride ourselves on a proficiency with all things Forge, the folks over at
Team Forge Union also fly the colours of the Monitor, and it was with them that we decided to spice up our Sunday evening just under a week ago. As you may have guessed,
Team Forge Union are a community also dedicated to Halo 3 map making, but they also have a wealth of other attractions on offer including constant competitions, Halo 3 versus ladders and a dedicated graphics section. For an insight in to the meeting of these two Forge communities; read on, dear children, read on.
We kicked off the evening with an outing to an as yet unreleased battle ground, Indoctrination by
arrrghSAM and Nosirrom, for some default One-Flag CTF. Round one started and our entire team started roaming around this unknown environment looking for stuff to do, though after a short while we did realise that we were actually on defence and rallied back to our tower accordingly. But for Team Forge Union this was very familiar ground, and they came at us with purpose and determination to wrench the flag from atop our glowing tower, fighting it further and further back to their base as the end of the round closed in. But while the object of our collective attentions kept up a steady pace towards Attacker base, it was not quite in time to close out this first round of the evening in Team Forge Union's favour, as we managed to keep them at bay just long enough for the timer to end things before they could. Round 2 saw us much more familiar with our surroundings than before, and we pushed forward unrelentingly off spawn to try and close this out as quickly as possible. But Team Forge Union had their base comprehensively locked down, and only through successive and constant attack did we get the flag out in to the open, tightly grasped in the fingers of yours truly, butterfingers apparently. I managed to land the flag on top of a neighbouring tower with my pro flag-running skills, much to Roche's despair. But gravity rescued the day, and once the flag was back down to earth we steadily brought it home to pull ahead early. Round 3 saw Forge Union rallied and focused, coming in early to take what was theirs and pulling it back to their base in much quicker time than before, tying up the game with only one round to go. And it looked like their momentum was to carry over, with the Forge Hub team finding no holes in their tower defence to grab that winning flag as the seconds ticked away. But, with less than a minute left, we once again got the flag down to our level, and some tight flag-running from Roche brought it home with seconds to spare, putting us ahead going in to game two.
Roche: Pegasi, you suck at this game!

For the second game, we decided to go with something a little more familiar in the form of an MLG classic, Team Slayer on The Pit. There was, of course, a twist, with our 5 man teams we thought it only fitting to up the kill limit to 100 and remove the timer completely. As it turned out, this made timing power weapons in to a seriously tricky business, but it didn't really matter in the end since 5v5 MLG Team Slayer is never going to be the most succinct and coordinated of affairs. Forge Union took and early and solid lead, and much as we fought back to bring it close on multiple occasions during the first half, they maintained their cool and always kept a few points ahead. They sent constant pushes on to our side of the map to keep us disoriented off spawn, and punished our attempts to regain some control whenever we ventured in to their territory. But around the 50 kill mark, things began to turn in our favour. We gradually managed to make in roads on to their side, pulling level and then ahead as we attempted to maintain this new found push. The minutes went by and the bodies piled up, but as the dust settled it was clear that our determination had paid off, we'd managed to take game two despite our troubled start.
Pushing back

The final game of the night was played out on a specially adapted variant of Epitaph geared towards the Snipeflag gametype variant. A Forge Union standard, Snipeflag is, rather obviously, One-Flag CTF with a strong dash of Sniper starts, consisting of four 3 minute rounds in which the attacking team must score as many flags as possible. Team Forge Union once again showed their strength on home turf in the first round, exploiting the chaos of 5v5 snipers to net a total of 6 flags within the first round, leaving us running around like headless chickens in the process. Round two saw nothing but a continuation of this dominance, with our opponents fighting us off time and again mere paces from the flag. Even through all of his complaining about spawning and dying over and over, Roche could not find it within himself to suck, putting up a Sharpshooter amidst the chaos. I, on the other hand, found myself in that Halo player's dream of a position, faced with 5 enemies lined up in front of my Sniper barrel, leaving me to do nothing more than pull the trigger a few times for the luckiest Killtacular seen in an SNF. But even with this new found slaying ability, and the flag cap that swiftly followed, we were faced with less than 30 seconds on the clock and no hope of a repeat performance. Forge Union, however, were apparently set on loop this game, replaying their first round dominance to take home another four flags and putting victory even further from our grasp. It all came down to our final attacking round, and we had only three minutes to cap 10 flags for any hope of victory. This, needless to say, did not happen, and the evening was ended on a high note for Forge Union, stamping their mark on this FU standard gametype with a convincing 10-4 victory.
We'd like to offer our thanks once again to
Team Forge Union for coming out and facing off against us last Sunday, as well as showing us some unfamiliar but very enjoyable custom variants. We here at Forge Hub had a great time despite the chaos, and we hope to lock horns with you guys again sometime.
