Site Update - June 7th

vBulletin Upgrades... Continued

Weeks roll by and the winds of change blow even stronger. A quick glance at the May 24th Site update will inform you that we’ve upgraded to vBulletin 3.8. Along with this upgrade, many new changes are being implemented on the forums, some permanent and some not. Many of you may have become giddy upon seeing post count below your avatars again. Foolish mortals! It is just an illusion! If you didn’t catch the last update below is an updated list to help you wrap your brain around the new changes going on at Forge Hub.

Updates:
  • Gamertags are now visible under rank images and link to profile pages at bungie.net.
  • Old school and dark theme have been revamped to work with version 3.8.
  • Blogs are back.
  • Updated version of shoutbox, moved to the top of that page.
  • Double posts get auto-merged together.
  • Google search bar has been removed from Old School theme.
  • Top stats are now back and are searchable in quantities over five.
  • New members are required to read and agree to the forum rules before posting, and again after receiving an infraction.
Map Database

Through an enormous amount of time and vigorous smashing of buttons we are here to announce a project that will help revolutionize the way we post maps. In an effort to make Forge Hub a better place there is a newfangled contraption in town: the Map Database. With a click of a button you can view your posted content, favorite threads and subscriptions. Members who use the RSS feed will feel right at home, because maps, authors and whole categories can be subscribed to via RSS feed. Showing a map to a friend is easy! Click Content Options and click Send to Friend. All you need to do is enter their Forge Hub username or email. Voila! You're done. Posting a new map? You can start writing up your post and save it as an unpublished draft to return to and finish later. You can even choose a date and time to automatically post your submission.

Map creators listen up, because here is the important part. You will need to repost your old maps in the Map Database in order for them to be searchable. If everyone does their part, we'll have an incredible resource for everyone. The same posting standards and rules that apply in the forums also apply to the database. The difference is that each map requires specific information that then allows members to search the database for the maps they really want. Need a Heroic DLC Competitive map that runs VIP with a minimum of 6 players? Need a Casual Juggernaught gametype? You can find it - and any other combination you desire.

The Map Database will NOT be replacing our current map forums. They will continue to function as normal and provide the same service they've always done. However, the database will serve a new function that further allows you to find just what you want. For each entry you have the option of writing a review for all to see. The minimum character limit is 1,800, and post icons are available to display your final score should you wish to include one.

With all these features we're incredibly excited to see how Forge Hub will grow as a resource and a community. Forgers have never had it so good. Check it out now!

Forgotten Treasures Contest

Seamlessly un-ending the sand dunes ascend and descend for miles on end. The dry air blows over the scarce wasteland that is the desert. A spider hunting in the desert balls itself up and tumbleweeds down a dune towards its prey. Yet, with death surrounding it a brilliant architecture bounces off the sun's rays back into the cloudless sky. Worn and still standing this pyramid has stood the test of time. The forgotten Treasures contest is over and entries are being weighed and judged. Time will only tell who will take the sandy cake in this contest. Ladies and Gentlemen keep your pants on and keep yourself tuned in.

Review Hub

Over the course of the past two weeks the staff and the rest of the community collaborated together to complete the Review Hub's Official Map Rating Criteria. Now, with the Review Hub's backbone in place the community can let out a sigh of relief. OK, inhale, now exhale. Relaxed? Good. Achieving this feat brings the community closer together, strengthens partnership with the testers guild and should provide a slow trickle of quality reviews for the Map Database.

Thank you for taking the time to chip in! It was great working with you. If you're looking to join the Review Hub, it's now open for business!

Promos

Guess who's back? Back again.....shake and tremble! The one, the only, Shad0w Viper - juggernaut mod! Spammers beware! In less intimidating news let's welcome Shaddoblade to premium! Kidbomber and What's A Scope? now have basic mod permissions in the Tester's Guild forum. iRaynne has joined the merry ranks of Loyal - congratulations. And finally, Mr. Nitrous has hung up his admin coat and put on his loyal slacks. A big thank you from all of us for putting so much time and effort into the site.

Mentionable Groups

Yes that's right, we're sloshing through the user-created groups and we've taken noticed of some of the more active ones. Boasting over 70 members, Zombies, Inc plays bi-weekly customs of tactical, intelligent infection. Raise some hell with these guys. Really, go ahead. Do it.

A new group on the scene is the FH Racing League, dedicated to everything racing. If you're an avid racer check these guys out! With 40 tracks of carnage available who could get bored with racing!?

TGIF #34 Recap

As another week goes by, another TGIF is hosted. We would also like to make note that this'll be the last of the bi-weekly TGIF recaps. For every 10 TGIF's there will be one recap, recapping a bit of each TGIF. Look forward to these in the future. So to honor the old ways, we got together some host's from this past TGIF to recap their parties. Here's what they had to say:

Vorpal Saint's Party Recap

My TGIF started off a bit bumpy with some clue, but, it did turn out decent enough. After playing that we moved on to play some funky gametypes that I have made and of course grifball. Things ran smooth for them and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Rocket Race was a blast even though Orange Team (The Other Dark and KyleIsNinja) won all three games. I then tried my hand at opening up the party to let more join. Which, at first wasn't bad. The first game we played as a larger party was Takedown on The Back Alley. It went over well. Surge was next on the list. The Other Dark and I teamed up and pwn'd some n00bs with our mad mongoose/sniping skills. We then decided to take our group photo on my map "kazeshini" (which I haven't published yet) and well... after that things sort of went down hill. Tremor Blast! wasn't all that bad, but we did get a few people who either didn't follow the rules or wouldn't go on to blue team. I decided to try our hand with some Cat N' Mouse which did seem to work for the better. After which we played various other things like Peasant Hunt, some custom hill games and 1-flag on Utah Mambo. During our Utah Mambo game though, everyone got booted out and we had to reform. Which, in turn, made the next to games laggy, long, and very bothering. However, it did end on a good note and I must say, out of all the bad, there was more good.

AmercanPsycho's Party Recap

I had a great time hosting my first TGIF, but it started out slowly. We started out playing an MLG FFA on Guardian to get all eight players in the party. For the first half of the TGIF, we weren't able to finish a single game without someone quitting or lagging out. Later, Roche and Xanon joined and helped out. We managed to keep a solid party of eight players for a while and were given a chance to test out some custom made MLG maps like Iv0ry Snak3's Delirium and Squidhands' Avarice. Overall, I had a great time and I hope to get another chance to host TGIF soon! Thanks to everyone who participated in my party!

Agamer93's Party Recap

At the beginning I was afraid that the party would never get larger, when we only had five people. So I simply just started playing some mini-games, so the party wouldn't be bored and after about three games I had a party of 16. From here on out I justified what we played to cater to the amount of people we had in our party. So to take advantage of the 16 person party, we played Desert Rats, and my party loved it. I then shocked a majority of my party when I put on Hobo Heights and that gave plenty of enjoyment and laughter throughout the game. The rest of the night I had kept the party to a max of 12 and it stayed like that for the rest of the night. We played mini-games, Infection, race-maps, and a little bit of Conquest for the rest of the night. My party had a great time and I'll gladly be hosting again.

Shock Theta's Party Recap

Euro-TGIF began with a couple of FFA games to give everyone a chance to warm up and fill the party to 8. This time round we all joined one large party chat, which let us natter away regardless of gametype. It really added to the atmosphere and everyone seemed to be having a good time. Over the 3 1/2 hours we played some competitive 4v4's, some old school classics and some crazy mini games. Oh, and a 45 minute game of Analysis with Eyless Sid getting owned 101 - 99 by TransactionZero ;D Thanks to everyone who stopped by!

Behind the Corruption

To add some spice to the Site updates, we're going to be throwing in "Behind the Corruption." Behind the Corruption is an interview of sorts of the good hard working staff members here at Forge Hub. Each new site update will bring in a new staff member. To start this party off, Insane54 will be showing off his power level and barrel rolls. So sit back and enjoy fellow hubbers.

Q. Who are you and what do you do at Forge Hub?

A. I'm Aaron, AKA Insane54... my main job at Forge Hub is basically routine admining (like changing names and usergroups, and banning n00bz). As a kind of side, I handle relations with affiliated sites.

Q. Sounds like a lot of work, how is it you got to your spot?

A. I joined Forge Hub back in November '07 when it was a Wordpress blog and kept active and helpful (or at least I like to imagine I did) till today. I went from a normal member to Loyal to Moderator to Staff (now retired rank), back to Moderator, and now at Admin. I really enjoy it even though it's tough, but I feel like the main purpose of having Forge Hub at all isn't just for a service or a respiratory of maps, but it's a community, and there's no reason to stick around if you're not going to be helpful.

Q. Which part of community do you like the most?

A. Probably the Forge Discussion area is my personal favorite. Though there's lots of frustrating threads in there, at least sometimes you get mature discussions or get to actually help people with their map. If I could describe it in a sentence, I would say "IT'S OVER 9000 barrel rolls". If that makes any sense at all.

Q. I'm sure Vegeta and Peppy would understand. Speaking of Forge Discussion, got any tips for people new to Forge?

A. Hm... that's a tough question because there's so much to say. Honestly, I'm not much of a textbook forger...I haven't seriously forged in months, I'm much more into the design side of making maps. I guess the easiest way to condense my theories of map design into a few sentences is... take your time and design fully before even going into Forge. Don't make structures or cover, the design of your map should be how you influence moving players around your map. Don't just be lazy and start building random objects or a map with no thought out lines of sight or layout. Think about lines of sight. Do many barrel rolls.

Q. With all that said, would you be willing to share any new maps you're working on?

A. Well, most of my projects are secret, but I can say we may be seeing a sequel to my Hangar 02 map, along with a few completely new ideas...I've also been throwing around ideas of making new 2v1 Saber Duel or Cave Freaks maps, but I haven't gotten too far on those. I had a ton of fun making my newly released MLG Requiem v2, so I've been drawing up a few MLG/competitive designs I might do, as well. Lastly, I have a super secret map me and Lord British Shock Theta have been (barely) working on since the Heroic maps came out. Hopefully you guys will get to see at least some of these in the next few weeks coming.

Q. Pretty nifty. Well, I think we've covered a good amount of areas. So for one final question, if you could play Halo 3: ODST early with three other members of forgehub, who would they be?

A. Well my first pick would probably have to be Roche178, who's been one of my internet friends I've ever had. The other ones are really tough, I like so many people at ForgeHub. Off the top of my head, I'd say Shock Theta, Mini Waz, and Xanon/Shanon/SHANON IZ LOLN. I'd like to say the guy who's "13 and almost has a girlfriend", but I can't remember his name. Maybe by now he's 14 and has a girlfriend...whatever.

There you have it. A man of many words and a long history with Forge Hub. We'd like to thank Insane for sitting down and sharing with us. If you like, you can check out Insane54's twitter by clicking this link.

Very nice post, the new map database sounds great! Although the current search feature does find some maps, it's not nearly as specfic as this new one sounds. Should be great! Does anyone know when the winner of the Screenshot Caption Contest #7 is being announced? I thought it said "the next site update" :S

Okay, most of this just cinfirmed stuff that I already found out/knew, but this database sounds quite good.

What happened to that screenshot caption contest? Or has a winner not been picked yet?

A good sig is on the way! *Opens MS paint*

Just wondering what type of interview style would you like to see? That is if you prefer any other type of interview. I want to hear your thoughts, because getting feedback from all of you can help improve the way we do things.
