HEV Drop Pod
After much demand and complaint from viewers, I have finally gotten finished this easy to follow, big lettered tutorial on how to make a standard HEV drop pod. There are other drop pods like the one made by Awkward Silence, I am just showing you how I made mine for ODS3. There's also the map download link at the bottom, and it's of the same pod as the one in the tutorial.
How to Make Tutorial
STEP 1
Hold a large flat object such as this block huge and have it float using the save/quit method. Have it as high as you want. But not so high that you can't even move there. Also, do not try to make this in the level between the sky bubble and normal sandbox. It DOES NOT work. You slow down during the descent.
Step 2
Place a wall double on one end.
Step 3
Place a normal wall like this.
Step 4
Place the first barricade like this.
Step 5
Set the normal wall to not respawn at start, and place a tube ramp infront of the barricade like this.
Step 6
Place another normal wall at the other end of the ramp.
Step 7
Set the walls to spawn at start. Then set the first barricade to not respawn, and start a new round. Then, place a second barricade beside the new wall you spawned in step 6 like this. Now, quickly place an immovable object such as a column stone small on top. This will cause the 2 barricades to merge together.
Note that movable object do not want to interlock. To do this, you'll have to brace and force them together.
Step 8
It should look something like this. Usually, the barricades will go crazy during this step and interlock with anything. This is normal. Set the first barricade to spawn at start now.
Step 9
Delete the block huge. Make sure you save 2 versions of this map. one before you delete the block, and one after. This is so if you made a mistake and the walls are too close or too far apart, it's easier to fix with a stable object underneath.
Step 10
Let the drop pod fall and see how it works out. If it splits up too easily, then go back to the version with the block huge and edit the walls so that they are closer together. If it doesn't fall at all, give some space in between the drop pod and the walls. This will usually take multiple times to get it right. The picture is an example of the drop pod getting stuck. A perfect drop pod should stay together during the entire drop.
Step 11
Once you are able to get the drop pod to fall perfectly, start a new round with the drop pods set to not respawn.
Step 12
With the drop pods gone, use either an invisibility/over shield/custom powerup and hold it underneath the drop pod. Then use the save/quit method to have it float there. When picked up, this will release the drop pod. This may take multiple tries to get it in the correct position. It is preferred that you use a custom powerup or an overshield to take the impact of the fall incase the user dies on landing. Although there's not too great of a chance, it will happen. Edit the custom powerup traits to do this.
Step 13
Try the drop pod to see if it works perfectly. If not, you may continue to keep adjusting the walls using the save/quit method until it works properly.
Congratulations, you have finished a basic drop pod! But what if you wanted to choose when it dropped?
Step 14
Set the barricades and tube ramp to not respawn at start. Then, start a new round and HOLD a pallet on top of the custom powerup. Make sure that you hold it until the barricades and tube ramp respawn. Do not release.
Step 15
Keep holding the pallet. When the barricades and tube ramp spawn, they will be interlocked with the pallet. Now, while holding the pallet, save changes and end game.
Step 16
You have finished an advanced drop pod! To activate it, you must destroy the pallet and that will let you pick up the custom powerup which releases the drop pod.
It should still stay together the entire way.
This is the not the same version that I used for ODS3. I've improved on it, and it works much better and stays together for the entire trip most of the times. Before you ask, yes you may use this concept or the drop pod for your maps... that's why I made the tut. And yes, I realize that it looks terrible aesthetically, but overall this drop pod took me maybe a bit more than 20 minutes to finish.
To be honest, I personally prefer the simple drop pod. The version with the pallet causes trouble and sometimes even lag, so I no longer use it.
There is a new map/area for building drop pods and the preview can be found here.
Thank you so much for finishing it. I knew nagging would get you someewhere! Anyways, some parts of the guide are kinda hard to understand(like when I should set someting to spawn at start and when not), but I'll try to work around those when I build my own.
Thanks again, and I've queued the pod for download already. Does it still hurt you though?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Usually no for this version. Don't nag me again. And anyone else who was 'nagging' me as well. I'll try to make the guide easier to understand, is it really that complicated though?
Do I count as a nagger? lol anyways, I think I was with you when you showed me this today.. I tried it out myself and out of ten times, 8 of them worked perfectly. Once it gos stuck, the other time it just broke in mid air, so good job. And your tutorial is pretty good too, I can't get the custom powerup to be in the right place though, get on live and help me plz.:3
You don't need to save/quit to custom powerup. For powerups, you just hold them then switch to Player mode, and you should pick up the powerup and it will float.
great drop pod man, ive tryed making these myself on several occasions but Ive never thought about incorporating the barracades into it, I'm gonna DL the map to take a look at how you've done your and then try to fit it into one of my maps, and dont worry I'll give you full credit from the drop pod idea.
ive been tryin to make one of these hev but had no luck. thats truly amazing how u made this one though. you are a hero. im actually in a game right now making it outside of the map so they fall for a longer time
